Abstract:
- Canada has long supported the LGBTQA+ community and has become internationally recognized as the host to the most celebrated LGBTQA+ pride events. The LGBTQA+ pride flag is flown in each Canadian province in government buildings and city halls yet, the LGBTQA+ pride flag is only flown in schools in several Canadian provinces. The relationship between students in school, especially those who identified as LGBTQA+ over the age of eighteen, and the LGBTQA+ pride flag was studied to determine if the location of the LGBTQA+ pride flag in schools influenced students’ feelings of acceptance, comfort and safety. An online survey was used to collect quantitative data on Likert scales from voluntary participants on social media in a cross-sectional research design. The results of the present study suggest that students in school associate the LGBTQA+ pride flag with feelings of acceptance, safety and comfort and use the flag to locate LGBTQA+ resources and individuals; however, the location of the LGBTQA+ pride flag had no significant impact on further influencing feelings of acceptance, safety and comfort.
