Abstract:
- The Sensitivity to Instructor Criticism Scale (SICS) is a 22-item self-report scale developed to detect levels of sensitivity to instructor criticism that exceed the normal threshold, resulting in negative repercussions on undergraduates’ mental health and academic outcomes. The novel SICS was administered to 223 university undergraduates. Subsequent exploratory factor analyses identified two underlying factors explaining the common variance shared by the items – Emotional Response to Instructor Criticism (ERIC) and Perception of Instructor Criticism (PIC) respectively. Item analyses found the overall SICS (α=.91), and the ERIC (α =.84) and PIC (α =.90) subscales to be internally consistent. Limitations and further validation strategies are discussed. Finally, theoretical implications for the broader sensitivity to criticism construct and practical implications for undergraduates in the educational context are proposed.
