Abstract:
The opening of the Øresund Bridge in 2000 lowered travel times between Denmark and Sweden significantly. This paper uses a canonical urban economics model to analyse the impact of the bridge on residential population, land rents and commuting flows. I show that there is a clear association between the extra access to workplaces provided by the bridge and increases to population and land rents in both Denmark and Sweden. I also present evidence to suggest that the commuter market is still in the process of transitioning to a new steady state. Finally, I find that the reduction in commuting flows caused by the border is equivalent to an extra nine minutes of travel time.
